I used to be a HGV driver for a timber haulage company working 80+ hours per week; I really enjoyed my job and it was something which I always wanted to do. After setting off on my rounds one morning I was involved in a RTC (road traffic collision) involving a van which was on my side of the road, hitting me head on.
I sustained serious head injuries requiring a craniotomy to remove skull fragments and a blood clot, spending 2 months in hospital. I suffered from post traumatic amnesia for an abnormally long time, around 5 weeks, whereby I didn’t know where I was, or who had visited me, forgetting my family and my girlfriend when they had left. I still have no recollection of the accident, 4 years on.
Following my release from hospital, the effects of the accident and surgery were evident and this had a negative affect on my family and put alot of pressure on my relationship with my girlfriend; it seemed that my whole personality had changed.
Even though my family knew I was different, with the main changes being having no energy, being unable to do any activity due to fatigue and feeling depressed and anxious, it didn’t feel different to me; I couldn’t remember the ‘old’ me, it was like a fresh start with a blank canvas – this was just the way that my life was.
As my family noticed such dramatic changes in me, I felt lost between recollections of the ‘old’ me and the ‘new’ me; life was confusing and almost like being stuck in limbo.
I wasn’t able to do any form of work due to my fatigue and small everyday tasks were so difficult and challenging; a stark contrast from my previous life. Trying to cope with this change was hard and left me feeling depressed and anxious – all of this change happening in an instant.
I was then introduced to Neuro Partners, through my case manager, and my support was delivered through sessions with the Assistant Psychologist. My issues were discussed and broken down into behavioural, future and planning, and fatigue specific issues; with intervention targeted to include my personal goals and interests.
In the two years since I have been supported by Neuro Partners, they have guided me towards achieving many of my life goals and they have always been there to work through my problems in a professional manner.
Now I am happily married and thanks to Neuro Partners I have a fresher look on life, hoping to be self-employed in the future.
Neuro Partners have helped me to achieve achievable goals and enjoy life again.
